Glebelands
Market Garden
| Glebelands Market Garden is a small co-operative
company, located in Sale. The 2½ acre site was established
in 1998, and wholesales all of its product locally.
The land which is leased from Trafford MBC is part of the
fertile Mersey Valley flood plain. This soil association
certified site uses natural methods of pest and crop
control and seeks to conserve and improve their land for
wildlife. |
Glebelands Market Garden Are committed to 6 principles
of purpose
- Secure Employment

We aim to provide secure employment for our members.
This means a livelihood for ourselves with some control
over our working environment. We accept the
responsibilities and rewards of this challenge.
We believe everyone must have access to nutritious and
uncontaminated food sources. Organic certification
provides verification and traceability of producers and
sellers, and a standard for the whole industry to strive
for. We seek to see fresh organic produce re-established
as regular foodstuffs.
- Reduction of Food Miles

We aim to minimise the number of miles travelled by our
produce. This is firstly to minimise damage to air
quality, noise and road traffic accidents, and secondly to
maintain awareness of seasonality and local variations.
Many Western food indulgences are wreaking havoc in far
off countries and we believe we must all address this.
- Environmental Improvement
We wish to see a richer and more diverse local
environment despite our urban surroundings. Our
agricultural practices will promote the enhancement of
flora and fauna in the Mersey Valley. We will be
responsible in our use of water, soil and air as we see
the environment as a collective resource.
- Commerce & Society

We believe efficient trading activities can and should
be conducted in a socially responsible way. We do not
believe globalised capitalism is sustainable and
furthermore acts in a socially divisive manner. To this
end we are a non-profit taking co-operative company. We
shall contribute surpluses towards expanding local
vegetable production and to those with similar aims to
ourselves.
In line with the aims of the co-operative movement we
will put time and energy into educational work. This will
be through the operation of our site, by encouraging
visitors and in the literature we produce and distribute.
We shall seek to make local schools welcome guests and
make space available for practical projects.
