The Altringham Carrot
A Potted History:
No we haven’t spelt it wrong this is how Altrincham was
spelt for a long time. According to the
“World Carrot
Museum” website, this Old English variety was introduced
in the 19th Century, has long and slender roots of good
flavour with a purple neck where exposed to light. Carrots
date back around 5,000 years – it’s a complicated history
visit the carrot museum web site for further information.
Unfortunately we haven’t been contacted by anyone who is
currently growing the carrot locally.
Where to Buy:
We’ve tried very hard to track down some seed but it has
proved very elusive. The only people we know who have some
is the Henry Doubleday Research Association or Garden
Organic as it prefers to be known now. Garden Organic has
a heritage seed bank which does contain the Altringham
Carrot but at the moment it is in such short supply they
cannot make it available. When available the seed is only
available to members so if you’re interested in growing it
you will need to check out their web site.
